My Development as an Honors Scholar

Introduction

This retrospective reflection examines the Honors courses and experiences that most contributed to my academic and professional development during my time at IU Indianapolis. Through Honors coursework, engaged learning experiences, and ongoing reflection, I developed stronger analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills that directly support my career goals in accounting / auditing at the Kelley School Of Business. The Honors College played a significant role in shaping how I approach academic work and how I apply what I have learned to my daily life. This reflection highlights Intermediate Accounting I and my role as an accounting intern at Myers and Stauffer LC as key examples of my growth as an Honors Scholar and demonstrates how these experiences align with multiple IU Indianapolis Honors College Learning Goals.

Honors Coursework and Academic Development

One of the most influential Honors experiences in my academic career was Intermediate Accounting I, taught by Professor Noor. This course required a higher level of engagement and accountability than traditional coursework and emphasized critical thinking, structured analysis, and clear communication. Rather than focusing solely on completing assignments, the course encouraged deeper understanding and application of course material.

Through this course, I strengthened my ability to analyze complex topics, take in information from multiple sources, and support arguments with evidence. My honors experience during this class included a research paper on the history of fraud in business and different methods of financial accounting to fool auditors and investors. This experience demonstrates this growth by applying course concepts to a real‑world issue. My work in this course is evidence that I achieved the Honors College learning goal of being an active participant in my intellectual experiences.

This course also introduced ideas and scholars that influenced how I approached academic work. Concepts from Kenneth S. Lorek and G. Lee Willinger encouraged me to evaluate information critically rather than take it at face value. As a result, I became more intentional about questioning assumptions and supporting claims with reliable sources, a skill that directly applies to my future career in auditing, where accuracy and professional skepticism are the foundation of the profession.

Engaged Learning Experience

In addition to Honors coursework, my participation in my internship at Myers and Stauffer LC was a defining part of my Honors education. This experience allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to practical situations while developing professional skills that cannot be learned solely through lectures or exams. During this experience, my responsibilities included analyzing cost reports for pharmacies and confirming accuracy with healthcare providers. These responsibilities required effective communication, time management, and problem‑solving skills. Through this work, I gained a better understanding of how to go about real‑world decision‑making. This experience aligns with the IU Indianapolis Honors College learning goal of developing strong communication, problem-solving, and civic‑minded skills. For example, when a number seems to not align with industry standards, or even when a number in one spot is an outlier compared to another on the report. This demonstrates how I applied academic knowledge in a professional or community‑based setting. Working alongside real staff and senior accountants, as well as senior analysts helped me understand professional expectations and the importance of accountability. This engaged learning experience strengthened my interest in accounting / auditing by showing me how my skills can be applied beyond the classroom. It also helped me identify areas for continued growth as I prepare for my full time position after graduation. Reflection on Growth as a Learner Over the course of my Honors experience, I developed a more reflective and intentional approach to learning. Earlier in my academic career, I focused primarily on meeting requirements and completing assignments. Through Honors reflection activities and ePortfolio development, I learned to evaluate my growth in terms of skill development, application, and long‑term impact. This shift demonstrates achievement of the IU Indianapolis Honors College learning goal of reflecting on growth as a learner through classes and engaged experiences. I now approach coursework by considering how each experience contributes to my broader academic and professional goals. Reflection has become an ongoing process that helps me identify strengths, address weaknesses, and make informed decisions about future opportunities.

Connection to the Honors College Community

My Honors experience also helped me develop a meaningful connection to the Honors College community. Spending extra time in the Honors College lounge allowed me to engage with peers and faculty who challenged and supported my development. These interactions reinforced the value of academic integrity, professionalism, and collaboration. This involvement reflects the Honors College learning goal of developing a connection to the Honors College and its community.

Preparation for Professional Goals

As a soon to be graduate, I am confident that my Honors experiences have prepared me for my next steps in the MSA Program at the Kelley School of Business Honors coursework strengthened my analytical and communication skills, while engaged learning experiences provided practical insight into professional environments. Together, these experiences helped me develop the ability to evaluate complex information, communicate clearly, and apply knowledge responsibly, skills that are essential in accounting / auditing. The Honors College encouraged me to take ownership of my education and approach my future career with confidence and professionalism.

Conclusion

Overall, my Honors College experience significantly shaped my academic and professional development. Through coursework, engaged learning, and reflection, I achieved multiple Honors College learning goals and developed skills that will support my success after graduation. This ePortfolio serves as a reflection of my growth as an Honors Scholar and as evidence of my readiness to transition into the next stage of my career.
